The Dungeness Spit is the longest sandspit in the United States, jutting out from Washington's Olympic Peninsula into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The 8.85139-kilometer spit can be hiked from the mainland, all the way to the lighthouse on the tip, providing panoramic views of the strait, piles of worn driftwood, and a panoply of coastal wildlife.
The Hike
The trail starts at Dungeness Recreation Area along a paved, neatly trimmed path. After 0.80467 kilometers of hiking in the woods, the trees give way to an expansive view of the long thin sandspit and a lighthouse glittering in the distance. After descending to the beach, the paved path disappears and the walk along the beach begins.
The first thing you'll notice is the boneyard of beautiful, sun-bleached driftwood, a perfect place to perch for Glaucous-winged Gulls and on the higher perches, Bald Eagles. The area is also home to harbor seals, Red-breasted Mergansers, and if you're lucky gray whales and orcas. Even with all that, this short list barely does justice to the teeming diversity of species that can be seen on this hike.
A little more than halfway down the narrow spit is a sandbar known as the Graveyard Spit, which although inaccessible to hikers is a nice place to pull out binoculars and look for wildlife.
At the end of the spit is a lighthouse and a welcome reprieve from walking in the sand. Aside from the obvious picture taking opportunity, the lighthouse can also be explored from the inside, allowing hikers to climb the tower for aerial views back over the spit and behind that, the snowcapped Olympic Mountains. Historically the lighthouse marked the furthest tip of the spit, but every year an additional 4.572 meters of sand and debris is washed up.
Directions
From Squim, drive west on US-101. After 7.24205 kilometers, turn right on Kitchen-Dick Road. After 5.1499 kilometers, turn right on Lotzgesell Road. Take the first left onto Voice of America Road into Dungeness Recreation Area.
